OWSD Palestine national chapter in cooperation with the Palestine Academy of Science and Technology, held an online seminar using Zoom entitled "The Impact of the Coronavirus Pandemic on Mental Health." On 19, September 2020.
Dr. Iyad Al-Hallaq (Associate professor / Clinical psychologist / Al-Quds University) and Mrs. Rawia Hamam (Community mental health specialist and director of training and scientific research / Gaza community mental health program) discussed the importance of maintaining mental health during COVID-19. The dialogue was moderated by Dr. Shahenaz Najjar, the member of OWSD Palestine National Chapter Executive Committee.
The lecture dealt with psychological repercussions such as anxiety, disorder, and depression that may affect women, the elderly, children, people with special needs, and health workers. The speakers also discussed the effect of social and physical distancing on mental health, how to react, thoughts, risks, and exaggeration of fear. Moreover, they stressed the importance of having psychological support for children in schools after this interruption by teachers and parents. They also pointed to the impact on psychopaths, who were affected by closures and social distancing. At the end, the speakers provided their advice to practice physical distancing while maintaining mental health by using video conferencing and continuously communicating with very close people and strengthening relationships with them.
Among their most important recommendations, they focused on the importance of psychological, social and economic interventions together to mitigate the impact of Covid-19 on the mental health of various groups of society.
